Did You Hear That?

The winds are whistling through the trees and candy is flying off the grocery store shelves as we draw closer and closer to the scariest day of the year. Halloween is just around the corner with all its ghouls, goblins, and witches. But those noises around your home aren’t just ghosts causing mischief, they could mean you’re in need of plumbing, electrical, or HVAC repairs.

The Haunted HVAC

Hearing a sudden bang from within your walls and ceiling may make you jump out of your skin. Not to fear, however, it’s likely not a trick but instead an HVAC in need of some attention. That bang could mean your furnace is trying to light with little success. The unsuccessful lighting can cause a gas build-up and create a booming noise.

While Halloween night is full of cries of terror, that screaming noise could be a failed compressor or high refrigerant pressure. You should act quickly to turn off the unit until a technician can take a look.

If you hear any of these sounds, wait until morning, if you dare, and give your HVAC tech a call.

Eerie Electrics

A staple of any haunted house is low, flickering lights. Having electrical problems, though, is just as scary and irritating. Humming or buzzing could mean different things depending on where it is coming from.

  • Outlets or switches - a loose wire, overloaded wire, or improperly grounded wire.
  • Light fixtures - in need of a new bulb.
  • Circuit breaker - overloaded circuit, call an electrician right away.

Be sure to never fool around with your electricity on your own, you don’t want to haunt your house any further!

Phantom Plumbing

You might have heard of a haunted toilet that seems to come on in the middle of the night on its own. We’re here to debunk the ghost theory and tell you it’s likely because of a broken flush valve.

A water hammer caused by an increase in water pressure is the cause of that clanging sound. And that terrible whistling? You probably have a clog somewhere in your plumbing system.
