Decorating for the Holidays

Over the next several months, you'll be up to your ears in holiday celebrations. It's time to pull out the boxes of decorations and get into the holiday spirit! Whether you're putting out pumpkins and cobwebs or Christmas trees and menorahs, it is important that you do so thoughtfully and safely.

Placement is Key

It's important not to toss decorations anywhere without thought! Doing so can cause tripping hazards and other issues. Try to avoid hanging decor loosely over entrances and exits to your home to avoid them catching and falling.

As you're setting up your Christmas tree, don't place it in front of or too close to a vent. This can impact your airflow, cause uneven temperatures in the room, and cause other HVAC problems.

Many homeowners have a fireplace they love to set up with all the trimmings and baubles. As you set up for the holidays, be sure to place items safely out of the way of the fireplace opening. If you do have dangling items like tinsel or stockings, be sure to remove them from the mantle before cozying up with a fire.

Candle Safety

If you enjoy using candles as part of your holiday decor, be sure to keep them far away from anything that can catch fire. This includes placing them on a stable surface where they can't be knocked over, keeping them out of the reach of children and pets, and trimming the wicks regularly. Always remember to blow out the flame when leaving the room.

Pro Tip: improve your indoor air quality by burning soy candles!

Lighting Displays

Whether you're stringing up lights on the outside of your home or wrapping them around your banister, it's important to be safe. Inspect all of your light strands for frayed wires, damaged sockets, and loose connections before plugging them in. If you find any damage, throw the strand out and don't use it.

When putting up your lights, avoid stapling or nailing them into place. This can damage the cords and create a fire hazard. Instead, use plastic hooks or zip ties to secure them.

With all this in mind, it's time to break out the decor and enjoy getting festive with your family! If you find yourself in need of air quality, HVAC, or plumbing services this season, give our team a call at (516) 217-2196 for help.
